West Coast Chronicles, LaRussell and Hit-Boy’s RENT DUE

Hit-Boy has long been recognized as a top-tier producer in rap, but his recent work has elevated him to new heights. Collaborating with Nas on the King’s Disease series, teaming up with Musiq Soulchild for 2023’s Victims & Villains, and joining forces with his father, Big Hit, for two volumes of Surf or Drown demonstrate his prolific output. Additionally, his unexpected project Paisley Dreams with The Game further solidifies his versatility and creativity.

The announcement of his latest project, RENT DUE, alongside Vallejo sensation LaRussell, sparked both confusion and anticipation. However, Hit-Boy’s signature West Coast sound perfectly complements LaRussell’s California-inspired lyrics, with infectious beats that resonate with both old-school and contemporary fans. LaRussell’s track “Pops For President” from his 2023 album MOTION sets the tone for RENT DUE, emphasizing his familial roots and the journey to his current status as a rising Bay Area voice. On the opening track “LEAD ME TO THE WATER,” a spoken-word intro by Tietta adds depth before LaRussell and Hit-Boy take center stage, with a soothing jazz flute providing a calming backdrop.

As the album progresses, LaRussell showcases his lyrical prowess over Hit-Boy’s dynamic production. Tracks like “ETHICS,” featuring MALACHI, blend melodic keyboards with hard-hitting basslines, creating the perfect soundtrack for cruising through LA streets. Meanwhile, preview single “ANOTHER ONE,” co-produced by Big Hit, captures the essence of West Coast hip-hop with its creeping piano lines and infectious g-funk bass. Throughout the project, LaRussell delivers his best performances yet, effortlessly weaving personal anecdotes and observations into his verses. His tribute to his mother on “ANOTHER ONE” adds a heartfelt touch, enhancing the cohesion of the album. With RENT DUE, LaRussell proves his ability to tailor themes to specific concepts, making it one of his most compelling projects to date. Backed by Hit-Boy’s masterful production, the album stands as a testament to the duo’s undeniable chemistry and the strength of West Coast hip-hop.
